Dance & Theatres from Oceania

Māori is an ethnic group of New Zealand, and one of their representative form of music and dance is called the Haka.

The Haka is performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet and rhythmically shouted accompaniment.

It is traditionally performed by warriors before a battle or a war, to intimidate their opponents by showing off their strength and prowess.

Hula is a dance developed from Hawaii.

The hula dance portrays the words of the chant or song that is accompanying it, and many hand motions are used to represent these words.

In the 19th and 20th century, the Hula was influenced by the Westerns and evolved to be Auana, and the dance is then commonly accompanied by western instruments like guitar, ukulele and double bass.
