Semester 1 - Western Music

Woodwind Instruments

A woodwind instrument produces sound when the player blows air against a sharp edge or through a reed, causing the air within its resonator to vibrate. Most of these instruments are made of wood but can be made of other materials, such as metals or plastics.

Oboe
Bassoon
Flute
Saxophone

Brass Instruments

A brass instrument produces sound when the player buzzes the lips together into the mouthpiece. By pressing the lips against the mouthpiece and blowing, a vibration is created. Most brass instruments are made out of brass. One of the main places we see brass instruments played today is in marching bands.

Trumpet
French Horn

Stringed Instruments

A string instrument makes sound by vibrating strings. One way to make strings vibrate is to pluck them (eg. guitar). Another way is to move a bow across the strings (eg. violin). A bow is a long stick with some sort of material, often horse hair, stretched across it.

Percussion Instruments

Percussion instruments are generally used to establish rhythm. They make a sound when they are struck, shaken, scrapped, plucked or rubbed. There are two types of percussion instruments - tuned and untuned.
