Malay Musical Instruments
Traditional Malay music and performing arts have origins and influences from India, China, Thailand and Indonesia.

Gambus

  • String instrument - 12 nylon strings

  • Commonly played in the traditional dance Zapin, and many others.

Seruling

  • Wind instrument - flute made of bamboo. 

  • Commonly played in the gamelan ensemble.

Gendang

  • Percussion instrument - a 2-headed drum with high and low pitches.

  • The body is made of wood, and the skin of the drum made using goat and buffalo skin.

Saron

  • Percussion instrument - a mallet is used to hit the bronze bars on the resonating frame.

  • Performer sits on the floor to play the Saron.

Kompang

  • Percussion instrument - a single-sided handheld drum.

  • The frame of the drum is made of wood, and the drum skin is made using goat skin.
