Malay Folk Songs

Chan Mali Chan

Chan Mali Chan is lively Malay folk song. It follows the structure of a pantun (i.e. a Malay poetic form) and singers have the freedom to add more verses when performing the song.

The song is structured with the first and second lines poking fun at a kid (goat), and the third and fourth lines are words in praise of a beloved one.

Burung Kakak Tua

Burung Kakak Tua is a Malay folk song about a cockatoo perched on a ledge and an old granny who had two teeth left.

The song takes the form of a pantun, a traditional Malay poetic form with a four-line structure, consisting of alternating and somewhat rhyming lines.

Lines one and two may sometimes seem unrelated to lines three and four, but there would always be some connection between them.
